My Office Makeover REVEAL!

A couple of months ago, I decided it was time to do something about the unorganized mess of an office I was working in. I wanted the space to be inspiring, bright, and much more minimal with a touch of sparkle. Instead of just working with what I had, I decided to start fresh. Out with the old, in with the new! When you look at the “before” photos, you’ll see why I was feeling less than inspired in my daily space:

For some reason when we moved here, I thought it would be a brilliant idea to paint the room a super bright aqua colour. It worked in the beginning, and then sort of lost direction. Nothing matched, the clutter of my supplies and things began to pile up, and I started to really hate it.

The first thing I decided I needed to do was paint the room flat white. This seemed like a simple enough idea at the time, but I underestimated the amount of coats I would need to apply. Four layers and two buckets of “primer included” paint later and my room was finally white.

the desk mission

My second mission was to find a new desk. I had put this off for so long because I always have SUCH a difficult time finding a desk. Seriously, why is desk shopping so stressful!? The one I had been using was literally the one my family first purchased when we got our very first computer, with a couple of coats of white paint and a solid backing added by moi. It was tiny and not very functional. Every other time I tried searching for a new one I would come up empty handed, so it had stayed with me all of this time.

I must have spent weeks searching for the perfect desk. One that included storage, a large pull out keyboard tray, a place for my CPU, a large surface, and a decent looking backside as I really don’t like facing towards the wall when I work. It’s like bad feng shui or something. I was willing to spend as much as I needed to for this perfect desk. Luckily, the one I found was from Walmart, of all places, and met every requirement. I LOVE it and it was so easy to put together by myself.

Alright, so now you want to see the result of my efforts. Here are the photos! Products I bought are all listed at the end of this post.

The result: I am loving this space so much. The lighting and the coziness of having pieces I love all around me makes it special and really easy to work in. Painting the room white was also a great idea as I take a lot of my blog photos in here and the white balance is so much nicer than that bright aqua tint! There are still a couple of pieces I plan on adding to the room, but overall it’s become my favourite place in the house, and isn’t that what any work area should feel like!?

Festive Nails: Mad For Plaid

I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t start the month of December off with a festive post! The winter season always tends to fill my closet with plaids, so this weekend as I was sporting one of my festive flannels, I decided to match my nails to my outfit. Creating plaid nails is a pretty easy process, you just need a little patience and a steady hand, or take a little extra time and use some sticky tape.

Step 1: Paint your nails red or whatever solid colour you like
Step 2: Paint on some thick black stripes. You can position these however you like and you’ll notice I made mine random for each nail. I used nail art brushes for this, but like I said you can also use tape if you don’t have a steady hand.
Step 3: Once dry, paint on two or three thinner lines inside of the vertical black lines.
Step 4: Once dry, paint white lines the same way in the horizontal direction.
Step 5: Now use your creativity and paint some additional thin white lines over the rest like a true plaid pattern. You can put these vertically or horizontally. However fits your nail best. There is no specific formula for this!

Let dry and finish with a top coat and that’s all there is to it.

Thursday Thoughts: How I Spend My “Me Time”

I think it’s important to take a little time for yourself every so often. Although I’m definitely the introverted type, I still enjoy those special moments of relaxing and clearing my mind while doing things I like.

Instead of a post today, I’ve taken to the camera once again to take part in the “Me Time” tag. I hope you enjoy it! I’m definitely getting more comfortable with filming and think it’s fun to break away from the traditional written post every now and then. Watch the video here and please thumbs up or subscribe!

Hope you enjoy the video! How do you spend your “me time”?

Holiday Gift Ideas: Most Wanted + A Mega Sale

Every year around the end of November, I go crazy putting together lists and gift ideas for my family members and myself. What I love most about this time of year are all of the sales (hello, Black Friday!), and boy, do I have a sale you’ll want to hit up!

Shopbop is having their biggest sale of the year starting TODAY at 7:00am EST until Monday December 1st. More information can be found right here on their website as well as below.

While rummaging through Shopbop’s website, I curated this little list of things I’d personally love to receive under my tree and thought it would also work well for any other females in your life… or even yourself!

Here’s what I chose for my wishlist:

1. Rebecca Minkoff Mini Jules Satchel (click to view)
Every girl needs a great handbag. I own a smaller Rebecca Minkoff bag and just love it. This larger mustard yellow leather satchel is both functional and stylish. I personally love handbags that have a handle as well as a crossbody strap, so this one jumped right out at me!

2. Rebecca Minkoff Love Small Zip Wallet (click to view)
A wallet is a gift that everyone needs. I loved this RM one because of it’s smaller size, and the quilting is adorable! This could easily fit into a smaller handbag or pocket and it also doesn’t break the bank.

3. Rag & Bone/JEAN The Skinny Repair Jean (click to view)
Oh, denim, you have my whole heart. This pair is pretty much everything I could ask for in a pair of winter jeans. I’m totally obsessed with the plaid patches. Don’t they just radiate a woodsy outdoor feeling?

4. Kate Spade Hello Notebook Set (click to view)
I never grow tired of cute notebooks… and I fill them up pretty quickly!  These make for some great stocking stuffers.

5. Sorel Winter Carnival Boots (click to view)
Cold weather dwellers, rejoice! These Sorel boots spoke to me and told me to stick them on my wishlist this year. Not only do they match those awesome jeans, they are rated up to -25°C. Canada, eh?

6. Mackage Steffy Coat (click to view)
The search for the perfect winter coat is always such a huge ordeal for me. I can’t be the only one, right? This one hits all of the marks for me.

7. Eugenia Kim Rain Two Tone Pom Pom Hat (click to view)
You all know I’m a sucker for a good beanie. I love the pastel shade of pink and the huge pom pom on this one.

8. Kate Spade Cedar Street iPad Mini Keyboard (click to view)
I can’t complete a wishlist without adding something techy! This would make an awesome gift for a friend or family member too! It’s an iPad case with built in keyboard, all bundled up in an adorable Kate Spade polka dot case.

Which of these things would you love to see under your tree this year? See my gift ideas for the blogger in your life here too!

Shopbop’s “The Big Event” includes all full priced items as well as sale items, and there are no brand exclusions! You can save up to 25% off your entire order with their tiered discounts. Use code GOBIG14 at checkout and click here to view the discount levels. It’s a great time to put an order together with your friends and get a little gift shopping going. Valid at their men’s East Dane site as well.

This post was brought to you by Shopbop, which just happens to be one of my fav stores. It does not contain affiliate links. All opinions and item selections are my own.

DIY Tomato Cage Christmas Tree

If there’s a project I like, it’s an easy one! I was looking for a smaller to medium sized tree to sit by my front steps outside, when it dawned on me. “Duh, why don’t you just make one!?”. So, I grabbed a couple of supplies and had a tree in just a few minutes.  This “tree” can be customized however you like and costs much less than your average store bought Christmas tree! It’s made with a tomato cage base and faux (spruce? pine?) garland. Here’s how you can make one too:

You will need:

– A Tomato Cage ( I got mine here)
– Some duct tape or packing tape
Bendable garland (I picked up 4 packs at the dollar store!)
– Decorations of your choice

1. Start by gathering the ends of your tomato cage like this.

2. Use some tape to secure the ends. I couldn’t find duct tape so I just used packing tape.

3. Garland usually has a thick bit of wire at the ends. Use that to wrap around the ends first, and then just continue wrapping…

4. As you go, wrap single pieces of the branches around the horizontal support rings of the tomato cage. This will stop the garland from sliding down.

5. Fluff it up as you go along to shape it into a tree. You can bend the branches a little to hide any bare spots.

6. When you’re finished, add lights and decorations!

My tree is sitting outside by my front porch so I used outdoor lights and wrapped the ornaments around the branches with wire a few times so they won’t blow away. I also left a few inches of the bottom of the tomato cage exposed so I could stick it into a barrel planter I have (that is currently a snowbank).

Where would you put your home “grown” Christmas tree?!
